Good week / weekend

Filed under: Uncategorized — mtbco @ 5:35 pm

Dialysis last week was smooth all week. No complications. Praise God.

This weekend was a good one. On Saturday, Lisa, Sally, and I went hiking in Corwina Park. It was a good, fun hike. We got out early so it wasn’t too warm. Here is a picture of a columbine I took on the hike:

The rest of the day we just spent working around the house and yard.

Today, Sunday school and church went well.  We were in Philemon for the second week.  Next week we’ll start on Philippians.   After church, Lisa and I went and saw “Get Smart”.   I was very pleasantly surprised.   It was a very good movie, funny with some action.   I had read a review that was very lukewarm about it, but the reviewer was expecting it to be just like the TV show was and that is why they didn’t like it.  I thought it was great – it had a plot, funny jokes, and was very entertaining.

High Plains Challenge

Filed under: Uncategorized — mtbco @ 5:36 pm

This weekend was a busy, exhausting, and fun one. Lisa and I went to Brush to visit our parents, and so that I could take part in the High Plains Challenge disc golf tournament. I got dialysis on Friday at 4:30 AM so we could get to Brush early and check in Friday evening. Everything went well, and Lisa, Sally, and I headed for Brush. We ended up eating out in Ft Morgan that evening, and practicing the 1st 6 holes on the Pessimist course.

High Plains Challenge disc golf

Saturday morning bright and early, we got our hole assignments for the shotgun start, and started play. Dave was in a group one hole in front of me, and Dad ended up being able to go over and play with the pros on the Optimist course. It was a hot day. I didn’t play that well, but my skills were nowhere near my competitors where even if I played my absolute best, I don’t think I would have been too competitive. I’m not sure if it is the vascath in my neck, or if I am just a little bit weaker, or haven’t been able to play quite as much as last year, but my distance is probably about 80% of what it was last year. Many of the players I was competing with could drive almost 2 of my shots. I know how Rocco felt against Tiger ;-) . On the pessimist course, there were just 3 awful holes. I started on 13, and soon reached number 16. I’m not sure exactly how it is supposed to be played, probably a long, high anhyzer out over the South Platte river that will turn back and miss the grove of trees that greet you. I don’t have that shot in my arsenal yet, so I had to try to go through a very small window in the trees. On the back side of the window, there is another tree. So, for someone with my distance and skills, you would have to throw a perfect “S” shaped shot to get through the window and avoid the blocking trees in the back, and still not put it in the pond behind.  Then, behind that, you have a long narrow isthmus with a pond on one side, and the river on the other (both of which were considered out of bounds). The isthmus would ideally be the target for my second shot. I ended up hitting a tree that made up part of the window and dropping straight behind it. This left me slim chances of making it onto the isthmus, with the trees at the back of the window. I managed to make it just onto the front of the isthmus on a small dirt mound. My next shot, I tried to make it over the isthmus – but it was long enough and with a weird enough stance I couldn’t execute the shot and ended up in the river. Luckily a member from my group was already down getting his disc and pulled mine out for me. I dropped, about half way to the hole, laying 4 (and this was considered a par 3). I managed to get home in 8. Next up was 17. This hole was even worse. It had the same path that went down the isthmus, but it was up on the top of a levy. To the left, was the river. To the right, a valley full of trees leading up to a pond. I tried the valley – and of course drove right into a tree. I was stymied, so punted out about 10 feet to the side. So, for 3, I threw again, and right into another dead lie in a clump of trees. I was able to punt out maybe 40 feet forward, but most importantly close enough to a big pond that I was able to just barely get my 5th shot across. So, I ended up with an 7 on this par 3. Both of these holes were very long, so without the technical challenges I probably would have scored a 4 due to the length, but for someone with my ability, these holes were just awful. On Sunday, I ended up going 6, 11 on those 2 holes again. I did have some very good shots too. On 7 on Saturday, you had to throw an anhyzer shot mandatorily left around a tree, and the rest of the hole followed a creek. I ended up executing one of the best turnover shots I have ever thrown and landed about 15 feet from the basket – I still don’t consistently execute this shot well. Unfortunately a branch blocked my birdie putt, but it was an easy 3. On Sunday, on hole number 4, which was about a 250′ shot, I threw a great drive. Everyone in my group started yelling “that’s going to hit metal”. There was one tree hanging down that you had to avoid. I thought this shot was going to avoid it, but there was a small twig hanging down that the frisbee hit, and I ended up probably 20′ short of hole once my frisbee lost it’s velocity trimming off the twig. I did make the putt and had tee honors on the next hole for probably the only time in the whole tournament. Saturday afternoon we played 18 on the Optimist course. This course is the normal one we play in Ft Morgan. It is a great course. I had a lot of fun, but probably ran out of gas on the back 9 and scored a little higher than I normally would have. Sunday it was back to the pessimist course. I played much better Sunday, but with the bad 16 and 17 I talked about above, shot the same score for the whole round.

Lisa and my Mom went to my cousin Jill’s baby shower on Saturday morning.

Saturday night we had a great barbecue at my parents. Lisa’s dad ended up cooking, as we took much longer than anticipated to complete the 36 holes. The food was great, seasoned by the tastiest seasoning – hunger after a good workout. It was a great evening of fellowship and good food.

We made it back home Sunday evening, and had a great weekend. It was such a blessing to be able to do all of this – I don’t count on being able to right now. Dialysis (at least dialysis with complications) makes planning this kind of stuff kind of difficult.

Rough night

Filed under: Uncategorized — mtbco @ 7:10 am

Last night was rough, but I am so thankful the paths were straight along the way. Here is what happened – I got to dialysis and was being put onto the machine. Things were going smoothly. Then, all of a sudden, there was a geyser of blood spurting out. It turns out, that the stitches on my catheter were gone, and then the pressure from dialysis had forced the catheter to back out roughly 1/2 way. I didn’t lose much blood thankfully. We quickly got pressure in the right spot, took me off of the dialysis machine, and they were able to get me into Porter Radiology at the last minute right before everyone had left for the day. They removed this catheter, and put in a new one into the same location. I really thank God for how smoothly this went – all of the details were taken care of where we just had to walk from dialysis to radiology, and they were all ready for me and probably the whole round trip plus the procedure took 20 minutes. After this, we went back over to the dialysis center and I got put back on the machine. During this treatment, my blood clotted enough where they had to change out the whole system in the middle, so plenty of alarms and it wasn’t a quiet, smooth treatment. So, with all that happened, we got home fairly late last night. It really didn’t end up being that big of a problem or inconvenience which I am very thankful for, and I am so thankful that the timing and all of the details worked out along the way for this – a sand castle I believe.

Your continued prayers are greatly appreciated. God is faithful, and I just want to depend on His mercy and grace. I am so thankful for all of the grace I have already received and know in His unchanging nature that He has so much more love and grace for us in the future.   Lisa is feeling better and I was so thankful she was with me last night.

Quick update

Filed under: Uncategorized — mtbco @ 9:16 pm

It was a good week for me.   Dialysis was smooth with no complications all 3 nights.  Lisa had a cold, and didn’t feel great for most of the week.  My feet still aren’t normal, but don’t really restrict me in any way.

Saturday we took a good bike ride into Bear Creek Lake Park.

Sunday school was good this morning.   We had a few new people which was good.   The only thing I felt really bad about is that we were finishing up the last few verses of Colossians, where Paul is dispatching the letters and sending greetings from his companions.   So, it ended up being a lot of history figuring out who the companions were, and not a lot of theology.   I trust God will bring more people to the class though, so I hope they were fed enough today even though it wasn’t very theologic material.   We’ll grow if God wants us to, and if not, we have a great class still that I pray glorifies God and declares Jesus mightily.    We took it easy and rested this afternoon – which is a blessing to be able to do once in a while.

My prayer is that everyone who reads this blog will grow in their knowledge of love of God, and that He may be glorified by it.

Prayer

Filed under: Uncategorized — mtbco @ 5:47 am

I wanted to post yesterday’s Sunday school lesson. It is on Colossians 4:2-6. Paul recommends the Colossians pray, and makes some prayer requests. So, we looked at Paul’s prayers and greetings, Jesus’ teaching on prayer, and some of the Psalms to try to come up with what a good, God honoring prayer includes. It was a good lesson, discussion, and I thought really worthwhile to share.

Colossians 4:2-6: Prayer

We had a good weekend. A good bike ride on Saturday. Yesterday we didn’t do much. My feet are still bothering me a little bit, so I thought it good to rest them.

We continue to appreciate your God honoring prayers. Probably 2 really specific things I would appreciate. 1st is that my feet will heal. I know they will, and God has done so much there already, and I need to be patient and in His time, everything will be back to normal. 2nd is a meeting we have with the transplant group on July 2. I don’t know if they’ll get into anitgen testing at this first meeting, but please pray that the antigens I have will lead to a speedy transplant. Again, I fully trust God handling all of the details here, and know the outcome will work best in His timing – but, if that could be a miraculously fast thing with the right anitgens to allow a speedy transplant, I would be so grateful. This will also determine some of the longer term modalities that would be best for me until we get to a transplant.  In both, I know that God will gracefully take care of me and handle so many details I can’t even think about – so please also pray for me to continue to grow in my faith and relationship with God, and to continue to trust in His timing.
